Background of the Study

Continuous Medical Education (CME) is essential for healthcare professionals to maintain and enhance their knowledge, skills, and competencies. For clinical nurses, CME provides opportunities to stay updated with advancements in medical science, adopt evidence-based practices, and improve patient care quality. In regions like Sokoto State, where healthcare challenges are prevalent, CME can play a crucial role in addressing gaps in knowledge and practice among nurses.

Studies have shown that CME positively influences healthcare providers' performance, leading to improved patient outcomes. For instance, a study in Nigeria found that nurses who engaged in CME demonstrated better clinical skills and decision-making abilities. However, despite the recognized benefits, participation in CME among nurses in Sokoto State may be limited due to factors such as resource constraints, workload, and lack of institutional support.

Evaluating the impact of CME on clinical nurses' performance in Sokoto State is vital for understanding its effectiveness and identifying barriers to participation. Such an evaluation can inform strategies to enhance CME programs and encourage greater involvement among nurses.

Statement of the Problem

While CME is acknowledged as a critical component of professional development for nurses, there is limited empirical evidence on its impact on clinical performance in Sokoto State. Factors such as limited access to CME programs, financial constraints, and heavy workloads may hinder nurses' participation in CME, potentially affecting the quality of patient care.

Without a clear understanding of how CME influences nursing practice in this context, it is challenging to develop effective interventions to promote ongoing education among nurses. This study aims to assess the impact of CME on the performance of clinical nurses in Sokoto State and identify barriers to participation, providing insights to inform policy and practice.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of participation in CME among clinical nurses in Sokoto State.

2. To evaluate the impact of CME on the clinical performance of nurses in terms of knowledge, skills, and patient care practices.

3. To identify barriers and facilitators influencing nurses' participation in CME programs.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of participation in CME among clinical nurses in Sokoto State?

2. How does CME impact the clinical performance of nurses regarding knowledge, skills, and patient care practices?

3. What are the barriers and facilitators affecting nurses' participation in CME programs?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is a significant relationship between participation in CME and improved clinical performance among nurses in Sokoto State.

2. Nurses who actively participate in CME demonstrate higher levels of knowledge, skills, and adherence to best practices compared to those who do not.

3. Specific barriers hinder nurses' participation in CME, and addressing these can enhance engagement and performance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on clinical nurses working in public and private hospitals in Sokoto State. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and performance assessments to evaluate the impact of CME on nursing practice.

Limitations may include self-reported data biases, variability in CME program quality, and potential challenges in isolating the effects of CME from other factors influencing performance. Additionally, the study's findings may be context-specific and not generalizable to other regions without considering local differences.

Definitions of Terms

• Continuous Medical Education (CME): Educational activities that serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional performance of healthcare providers.
